New Zealand signs 12-country regional free trade agreement                                                                      

Trade Minister Tim Groser recently signed the agreement

establishing the ASEAN - Australia - New Zealand Free Trade

Area (AANZFTA) at an official signing ceremony in Hua Hin,

Thailand. "This agreement is of considerable economic and

Foreshore and Seabed review Announced  

The terms of reference and members of the Government’s

ministerial panel to review the Foreshore and Seabed Act have

been announced by Attorney-General Christopher Finlayson

today.  A review of the Foreshore and Seabed act was provided

for in the Confidence and Supply Agreement between the National

Community Irrigation Fund Scope Extended

The Government is giving the green light to local government

agencies developing water strategies that look at rural water

infrastructure to apply for grants from the Community Irrigation

Indigenous leaders gather to discuss traditional

practices in mental health

A conference involving indigenous leaders in mental health from

New Zealand, Canada, Australia and the United States will be held

at the Manawatu campus from Sunday to discuss traditional

practices in mental health.  Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Mäori and

Pasifika) Professor Mason Durie will co-host the event in partnership

with the North American based International Initiative for Mental

Geothermal Energy: Intelligent Use Of The Earth’s

Heat       

Geothermal energy falls under the category of renewable energy

source because the water is replenished by rainfall and the heat

is continuously produced inside the earth. Geothermal energy is

Ministry for the Environment’s national environmental

reporting programme                                    

A key focus of the Ministry for the Environment’s national environmental

reporting programme is to produce a series of national environmental

‘report cards’ to provide updated information on the indicators reported

in Environment New Zealand 2007 (the country’s second national state

of the environment report). These web-based reports are designed for a

wide readership, and will be published on a regular basis (in some

cases, annually) as new data becomes available.

 

The first national environmental report card looking at marine

areas with legal protection is now available on the Ministry for

the Environment’s website (see link below). A further three report

cards looking at household consumption, road transport and air

quality are close to completion. River water quality and waste

composition report cards are due out early next year.

The Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector - Tariana

Turia - is praising the work being done by 'self-help' community

groups and believes they will be the groups to help people at

Promoting Generosity Hub: What value do

we place on generosity?

At times of economic downturn it is even more important that

we all work together to be generous and support our

communities. The Promoting Generosity Hub has continued

its discussion paper series, Focus on Generosity. Attached

you will find Paper 2, responding to the question What

value do we place on generosity? More >>

 

This series is intended to facilitate the sharing of existing

knowledge, so we can all learn from and build on it. We

hope that it will create discussion, debate and response.

Your feedback will be incorporated into an updated Focus on

Generosity series that will be made available before a

communities-of-interest meeting in mid 2009.  More information

Calling for Applications for Hauora Maori

Scholarships 2009

Associate Health Minister, Tariana Turia, has announced

that more than 500 scholarships are available to supportand

encourage Maori students taking up careers within the health

sector.

“I hope that everyone will spread the word, to encourage Maori

students who fit the criteria to go online, and submit their

applications by 5pm Friday 10 April 2009 on

http://www.moh.govt.nz.

 

Oticon Foundation: Scholarships for the hearing

impaired

The Oticon Foundation is now calling for applications for grants,

which must be received by 31 March 2009.   The Oticon Foundation

is offering financial help to individuals and organisations for projects

to improve the quality of life of the hearing impaired.  More details

Land Use Capability (LUC) Awareness Workshops for farmers and professionals involved in land use decision making

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), with support from regional councils, is funding a series of workshops by Agresearch on the recently revised Land Use Capability (LUC) classification and its practical application.

 

The workshops will be held in Whangarei, Rotorua, Dannevirke, Marton, Stratford, Christchurch and Gore.

 

LUC is a tool that is used to describe land’s suitability for long-term sustained production. It is becoming an important land use decision support tool. Even if you’re already aware of LUC, learning about the recent revisions may prove useful.

The 2009 Specialized Human Rights Program of the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at American University Washington College of Law is now accepting applications.
