Conference on the Future of the Pacific Labour Market
The Pacific Cooperation Foundation (PCF) is holding a conference on 'The Future of the Pacific Labour Market' to be held 29-30 June at Te Papa, Wellington.
We would welcome attendance by representatives who are directly involved with Maori business which employ large numbers of unskilled and semi-skilled people and also anyone else who see them selves and their business benefiting from this conference.
The conference will aim to provide a platform to enable the major stakeholders to come together and discuss both policy and particular issues around the temporary movement of Pacific people for employment purposes against the wider background of economic development and job creation in the region. We hope the conference will be able to explore ways of making temporary employment in New Zealand work for the benefit of both New Zealand industries ant the Pacific Islands nations.
Conference speakers and panelists will be drawn from a wide spectrum of stakeholders including the World Bank, Commonwealth Secretariat, Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, employers and industry associations, unions, government departments, and regional governments, academics and media. We are also tapping into the experience of the Canadians and the Caribbeans who have run a successful seasonal work scheme for many years.
PCF hopes that the conference will provide win-win solution for New Zealand industry and for Pacific Island people looking for work. The conference will seek to identify ways of managing temporary labour schemes so that they do not result in overstayers or other problems that have marred such schemes in the past.
There isn't much time left until the conference so be in quick and get involved in such an important issue as the Future of the Pacific Labour Market.
