In the face of Treaty Settlements and resource allocation, the development of governance practice is critical to the success of Maori economic progress. Developing models to meet our needs is of increasing concern for Iwi and the Crown alike.

Likewise for FoMA, the promotion of good governance and management practices has always been a key factor in our activity and in Maori resource development across the board. Hence, FoMA currently provides the following four-workshop programme:

Programmes Currently Available

  • Nga Aho Tawhiri - Business Leadership Skills

  • Te Ara Whakamua - Business Strategic Planning

  • Nga Pataka Toopu - Business Investment

  • Various Industry Seminars - working in conjunction with FoMA networking initiatives

These workshops encourage us to take advantage of the unique nature of Maori organisations, their communally owned resources and the interests they serve. We have found that those in governance positions - trustees and directors - benefit most from participation, as they are able to apply the korero immediately.

The workshops are interactive in design; based around a handbook and associated learning aids; and draw on the expertise of the facilitator. Our focus is on the upskilling of individual members of your Board or Committee. The workshop handbooks are sufficiently generic to allow the facilitator to tailor the course to participants at hand, and the issues they are facing in their business activities.

What If There’s Only Me?

We recommend you organise a minimum of 10 committed participants in your area to share the cost and also that the course works better with a group dynamic - especially as the courses are no longer at no cost to the participant. Nevertheless there are other possible sources of financial support - see TPK Capacity Building and CEG for possibilities.

What if I Own My Own Business, Is it Still Worth Doing One?

Although our programme has been designed for Maori Authorities, the process of running a business has commonalties regardless of the nature of the organisation. This is particularly so if it is a Maori business with responsibilities to the Maori community. In that regard you will benefit. In fact when we say BUSINESS we mean any organisation run by a director, trustee or member of a committee of management, whether or not it is intended to make a profit.

You are also eligible for other assistance. Refer to Business Information.

How Much Does It Cost?

As at 1 January 2006

  • Handbooks $50+gst / book
  • Per Facilitator $1200+gst daily fee -ratio: 1 facilitator per 10 participants
  • Facilitator travel, accomodation, related disbursements

Hosts will also need to provide a venue, equipment such as whiteboard and projector, along with other miscellaneous course material, and kai if preferred.

Although previously provided at no cost courtesy of BIZ this is no longer the case. We recommend collaborating with other organisations particularly if you are small. You may benefit also more from this dynamic and the cross fertilisation of ideas it brings.
