Sounds Good How Do I know Which One is For Us?
What if I Own My Own Business, Is it Still Worth Doing One?
In the face of Treaty Settlements and resource allocation, the development of governance practice is critical to the success of Maori economic progress. Developing models to meet our needs is of increasing concern for Iwi and the Crown alike.
Likewise for FoMA, the promotion of good governance and management practices has always been a key factor in our activity and in Maori resource development across the board. Hence, FoMA currently provides the following four-workshop programme:
Programmes Currently Available
-
Nga Aho Tawhiri - Business Leadership Skills
-
Te Ara Whakamua - Business Strategic Planning
-
Nga Pataka Toopu - Business Investment
-
Various Industry Seminars - working in conjunction with FoMA networking initiatives
These workshops encourage us to take advantage of the unique nature of Maori organisations, their communally owned resources and the interests they serve. We have found that those in governance positions - trustees and directors - benefit most from participation, as they are able to apply the korero immediately.
Here’s just some of the feedback we’ve received in the past couple of years from 1500 attendees around the country…
Nga Aho Tawhiri /Business Leadership Skills
Opotiki
"It gave me a better understanding of my role and how important participation, communication, delegation, honesty, trust etc are to success”
“Very enlightening. Compared to other trustee courses I have learnt from this course – I felt free to ask questions.” “Excellent presentation at a level I can understand.”
Kirikiriroa
“Incredible ideas for different ways of looking at strategic direction” “Something to build on and spread throughout my fields of endeavour. It opens up issues which will help myself, my whanau and my entity into the business world.”
Te Ara Whakamua /Business Strategic Planning
Taranaki
“Excellent! I can go back to my workplace with increased confidence to put into action strategic planning and have staff working as a team, knowing what we’re all about and what we are aiming to achieve.”
Nga Pataka Toopu /Business Investment
Wanganui
“Very professional, very well organised” “Very important guidelines on which path I should be looking at”
Turanganui a Kiwa
“Attendance by older people with a will to learn is heartening”
Whangarei
“Good value - a must for trustees” “Enjoyed facilitation by Maori”
“Excellent reference material” “I am more confident about investment.”
The workshops are interactive in design; based around a handbook and associated learning aids; and draw on the expertise of the facilitator. Our focus is on the upskilling of individual members of your Board or Committee. The workshop handbooks are sufficiently generic to allow the facilitator to tailor the course to participants at hand, and the issues they are facing in their business activities.
Who runs it?
The courses are coordinated via the FoMA Office whilst the facilitators are drawn mainly from within FoMA ranks. They represent considerable institutional knowledge and expertise in the area of Maori Business and land development. Our pool of facilitators includes:
• Mark Tume • Peter Charleton
• Paul Morgan • Kingi Smiler
• Tumanako Wereta • Tutekawa Wyllie
• Roimata Kirikiri • John McEnteer
• Alan Haronga • Robin Brockie
• Temuera Hall

We recommend you organise a minimum of 10 committed participants in your area to share the cost and also that the course works better with a group dynamic - especially as the courses are no longer at no cost to the participant. Nevertheless there are other possible sources of financial support - see TPK Capacity Building and CEG for possibilities.
What if I Own My Own Business, Is it Still Worth Doing One?
Although our programme has been designed for Maori Authorities, the process of running a business has commonalties regardless of the nature of the organisation. This is particularly so if it is a Maori business with responsibilities to the Maori community. In that regard you will benefit. In fact when we say BUSINESS we mean any organisation run by a director, trustee or member of a committee of management, whether or not it is intended to make a profit.
You are also eligible for other assistance. Refer to Business Information.
As at 1 January 2006
- Handbooks $50+gst / book
- Per Facilitator $1200+gst daily fee -ratio: 1 facilitator per 10 participants
- Facilitator travel, accomodation, related disbursements
Hosts will also need to provide a venue, equipment such as whiteboard and projector, along with other miscellaneous course material, and kai if preferred.
Although previously provided at no cost courtesy of BIZ this is no longer the case. We recommend collaborating with other organisations particularly if you are small. You may benefit also more from this dynamic and the cross fertilisation of ideas it brings.
