advocacy

Advocating the interests of the FoMA membership, and as they generally coincide with those of the wider Maori community, is an important aspect of FoMA core business. It is Crown policies that impinge most on the activities of Maori organisations, and their interests as tangata whenua. Hence the Federation's Head Office is based in Central Wellington, close to bureaucracy, with a view to maintaining effective relationships with both Government and Parliament.

Being at close quarters also allows the wider membership to be informed as new developments come to hand. Governmental policy is beginning to be developed from its conception with input and feedback from Maori organisations. Such a conciliatory process encourages the progress of more robust policy and legislation.
