Subdued recovery to continue - Treasury

It's a beer, or maybe even a watered down shandy, of an economic recovery, rather than a champagne party.

 

The Treasury's latest monthly economic update says New Zealand's economic recovery will continue over the coming year, although it won't be much to write home about.

 

Treasury appoints new deputy secretary/chief economist

Treasury has appointed Dr Girol Karacaoglu to the role of Deputy Secretary - Macroeconomics, International and Economic Research.

 

Dr Karacaoglu will provide strategic leadership on broad economic policy issues, in particular fiscal and monetary policy settings, and New Zealand’s international linkages, chief excutive Gabriel Makhlouf said.

 

He will also take on the position of chief economist.

 

Exporters warned to book shipping

Southern exporters are being cautioned to plan ahead for shipping space with the likelihood major shipping lines will again not be offering unscheduled vessel visits to take pressure off peak season loads.

 

With dairy, beef and lamb exports coming into their four to six-month-long peak season, year-round annual exporters of produce, and new exporters, should not take it for granted space would be available, DCB International director Mark Willis said yesterday.

Aftershock data revised to assess risk

Scientists should have a better picture by the end of the month of when Canterbury's shakes will settle into a "background" level, GNS Science says.

 

Dr Kelvin Berryman, of GNS Science, said about 100 scientists from around the world were helping build a better model for predicting earthquakes in Canterbury, taking into account the thousands of shakes in the past 15 months.
