Water Allocation
The Government is currently looking into water allocation and are holding a number of hui through out the country to inform stakeholders of the direction the government is planning to take. The government is aiming for sustainable and efficient use of water although there has been prior consultation with Maori the government is still silent on Maori issues, this may be a concern to Marae and food gathering sources.
The Governments current proposal is to establish a leadership group that will report directly to the ministers. FoMA is currently attempting to have representation in this group to ensure that FoMA member and Maori are spoken for. The government has not got very far with the action plans, but has reiterated that water will remain a public resource and that allocation will be controlled by the crown. At present control will be through tradable water rights. The discussion document can be found here

Maori Party Speech – What will I tell the people?
During the 3rd Reading of the Education Amendment Bill Pita Sharples confronted the house with the lack of support to Maori Party initiates. The Maori party made very good suggestions, such as if Maori gifted land for educational purposes and it is not being used then give this back to the people so they can establish their own learning centres instead of being in warehouses. Pita Sharples also brought up issues of funding. This is a very clever article that gives an insight into what Maori fight against within the political arena. Read Article
