The Securities Commission has started a public education programme to help people make better investment decisions. Maori groups have sometimes been targeted by such schemes.
They are particularly concerned about fraudsters who target groups of people with common interests, such as churches and ethnic groups. Fraudsters take advantage of the trust that exists within the group to promote their schemes. One such scheme, promoted to church people, collected NZ$14 million!
